چکیده
Recently an article published in Molecular Cell reveals the mechanism of a nuclear N-methyladenosine (mA) reader, the YTH domain-containing protein 1 (YTHDC1), in regulating pre-mRNA splicing [1]. Meanwhile, two additional articles published in Nature and Nature Chemical Biology report the first transcriptome-wide maps of N-methyladenosine (mA) at high resolution, suggesting a functional role for mA in translation regulation [2,3].

Since their discovery, microRNAs have led to a huge shift in our understanding of the regulation of key biological processes. The discovery of epigenetic modifications that affect microRNA expression has added another layer of complexity to the already tightly controlled regulatory machinery. Modifications like uridylation, adenylation and RNA editing have been shown to have variable effects on...
متن کاملEpigenetic Modifications of Host Genes Induced by Bacterial Infection
Introduction: Epigenetic mechanisms regulate expression of the genome to generate various cell types during development or coordinate cellular responses to external stimulus. While epigenetics is of fundamental importance in eukaryotes, it plays a different role in bacteria. This article uncovers the most important recent data on how bacteria can alter epigenetic marks and can also contribute t...
متن کاملA fly view on the roles and mechanisms of the m6A mRNA modification and its players
RNA modifications are an emerging layer of posttranscriptional gene regulation in eukaryotes. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is among the most abundant modifications in mRNAs (mRNAs) that was shown to influence many physiological processes from yeast to mammals. Like DNA methylation, m6A in mRNA is dynamically regulated. A conserved methyltransferase complex catalyzes the deposition of the methyl gro...
متن کاملMultiple functions of m6A RNA methylation in cancer
First identified in 1974, m6A RNA methylation, which serves as a predominant internal modification of RNA in higher eukaryotes, has gained prodigious interest in recent years. Modifications of m6A are dynamic and reversible in mammalian cells, which have been proposed as another layer of epigenetic regulation similar to DNA and histone modifications. m6A RNA methylation is involved in all stage...
